Europe and the world
Among their peers worldwide, the EU member states are facing a number of new risks. Moreover, the rise of new powers -- above all China and India -- are increasing international competition. These changes are increasing both new opportunities and global tensions. Many developments are not only causing economic dislocations in Europe, they are also forcing it to re-examine its social assistance programs and social structures in general.
The European Union's greatest challenge will be to help create a new world order is stable and just. As a model of successful multilateralism, the EU offers the possibility of building a politically stable social order capable of ensuring civil and human rights by promoting solidarity, social participation and multilayered governance relationships. The overriding question, however, is how the EU can use its global political power to ensure effective multilateralism.
We carry out a number of projects that look at Europe's role in the world. They focus on the following core issues:
-- Europe and the Middle East
-- Europe and Russia
-- Europe's Neighborhood Policy
-- Europe and the Balkans
-- European security
